Beaches of Eastern Coast
Pondicherry,
has a lovely beach-Serenity beach, where one can relax, sunbathe, swim or
take a stroll along the promenade. The beach has historical connections too.
These sands have witnessed some of the fiercest Anglo-French battles.
Mamallapuram, lies 60 km south of Madras and is an ancient sea side
town. Today it is one of India’s well known beach resort.
Marina Beach, The fine sandy beach that stretches to about 5 km from
the harbour to St Thome has the distinction of being the second longest beach
of the world. The Sunday afternoon market is worth visiting Bheemunipatanam
Just 24 km from Vishakhapatanam, Bheemunipatanam is one of the safest and calmest
beaches on this part of the coast. It is also the site of the ruins of the east
coast’s oldest Dutch settlement (17
th century). A little way inland
from here is Hollanders Green, the Dutch cemetry. Gopalpur on sea is a miniature
seaside haven where boating, yachting and a seaside run invite visitors to share
the expanse and have fun. Sand dunes, groves of coconut palm and casuarina’s
separate the small town from the beach on the Bay of Bengal. The backwater,
creeks and lagoons give some variety. 18 km from Behrampur. Puri has a long
stretch of golden beach, shallow enough to walk out along distance, with superb
surf. Sunrise is particularly striking. However, the currents here can be treacherous
at times. One has to take great care and avoid swimming out too far.
Digha is a charming sea resort lying around 200 km from Calcutta. The placid
sea water make it a haven for bathing. Embraced by casuarina groves, the resort
is a fine gateway from the maddening crowd and was a most opted pleasure spot
for Britishers. This very wide beach of clean sand is unusual in its view of
unhindered openness.
